A self-managed plan means you are in charge of organising and paying for the help that you get through your plan both products and services. You can pay them with your own money and then the NDIS will pay you back by putting money into your bank account, or you can put the invoice or payment type and amount in the portal and the NDIS put the money into your account for you to pay with. You can choose to self manage as many of your service providers as you want.
